Kansas CPA Exam requirements state that you must be declared eligible for the CPA Exam and then licensed by the state. A candidate becomes eligible for the CPA Exam by meeting specific requirements that are determined by the board of accountancy for their specific jurisdiction. Below are the various Kansas CPA Exam requirements:

Kansas CPA Exam Education Requirements

Minimum Degree Required: Bachelor’s

Are 150 semester hours required to sit for the CPA Exam? Yes

Hold a bachelor’s or higher-level degree from a college or university approved by the Board and 150 semester hours (225 quarter hours) with a concentration in accounting as outlined below:

At least 42 semester hours (63 quarter hours) in business and general education courses including the following:

  • A macroeconomics course, a microeconomics course and one upper-division economics course.
  • At least two courses in legal aspects of business or business law
  • College algebra or higher-level math course
  • Statistics and probability theory
  • Information systems and applications course, which shall be equivalent to at least a 200-level course
  • Finance
  • Management and administration
  • Marketing
  • Production, operations research or applications of quantitative
    techniques to business problems

At least 11 semester hours (16.5 quarter hours) in written and oral communications

At least 30 semester hours (45 quarter hours) in courses in accounting theory and practice, including the following:

  • Financial accounting and reporting for business organizations, which may include intermediate accounting, advanced accounting or accounting theory
  • Managerial accounting beyond an introductory course
  • Auditing course concentration on auditing standards generally accepted in the U.S. as issued by the AICPA auditing
    standards board or the PCAOB or both
  • U.S. Income Taxation
  • Accounting systems beyond an introductory computer course

Note: As of Jan. 1, 2024, for all initial examination applicants, a course in data analytics for business or accounting, which shall be equivalent to at least a 200-level course.

Application Process

  1. Review the exam requirements
  2. Submit the exam application and enroll in Surgent CPA Review
  3. Request and forward transcripts. Contact any educational institutions attended and request that transcripts be forwarded to CPA Examination Services for their evaluation. If you do not expect any problems in processing your application, this is a great time to start studying with Surgent CPA Review to greatly increase your chances of passing the CPA Exam.
  4. Pay the exam fees. After receiving the required information, the State Board will issue your Authorization to Test (ATT) to the National Association of State Boards of Accountancy (NASBA). You will receive a Notice to Schedule (NTS) which is good for six months.
  5. Schedule your exam. Your NTS allows you to start scheduling your exams. You can sit for the exam parts in any sequence so you can plan your reviews to coincide with your exam scheduling. The most efficient approach is to sit for two parts in each exam window; however, exam fees paid for parts not taken are not refundable. Exam times are scheduled with Prometric and can be set up online at www.prometric.com/cpa. You can take the exam at a site in Hays, Overland Park, Topeka, Wichita or any other Prometric location that is convenient to you.
